Caleb Wallace’s 1998 Montero is well equipped for overland adventures.
Some overland rigs are instantly noticeable due to a unique graphic, particular accessories, or some other distinguishable feature. However, few are as instantly recognizable to me as Caleb Wallace’s 1998 Mitsubishi Montero. Not only is it a fairly unique make and model, but Caleb has done an excellent job on the build. We asked Caleb to tell us a little more about his build, and as always the photos he sent make us want to head off and explore the Pacific North West ASAP.
OX4: Why did you select a Montero for your adventure rig?
Caleb: After spending almost a year building and exploring the NW in my 2004 Subaru Outback LL Bean, I knew I had outgrown the platform and was ready for a change. As I looked around at options for replacement, I stumbled across the Mitsubishi Montero. A reliable, very capable, and spacious vehicle that met all the criteria I had for a vehicle I would use to travel in.
Through tons of research prior to purchasing the Montero, it seemed apparent that previous owner maintenance and neglect was the one downfall of the platform. Because reliability is such an important piece for me, I looked for the cleanest Montero I could find. During my search, a friend mentioned a Montero specialist in Bend, OR by the name of Sean Kendall (@Oregon_Monty). Sean is known for his rebuild and restoration skills which have helped to keep many of these vehicles on the road.
OX4: What has been your most memorable trip to date?
Caleb: Earlier in 2020, we took a 4 night trip headed out to explore the vast scenery of Eastern Oregon. From the Alvord Desert to the Owyhee Canyonlands, the trip taught us tons. Primarily learning to enjoy the journey and accept flexibility with the unexpected seemed to be the main theme of the trip.
OX4: What modifications to the Montero have been the most worthwhile?
Caleb: First and foremost, I believe maintenance is the most important mod anyone can do to their vehicle. Preventative engine and suspension maintenance are key to keeping a rare old 4×4 on the road for all touring activities. After maintenance, the Montero has a simple and effective suspension with Koni Heavy Track shocks, King Progressive lift coils in rear, along with cranked stock torsion bars. The vehicle has a custom interior buildout with cooking area, dual battery setup, and Dometic CFX50w which make it livable on the road.
OX4: We definitely agree. Taking care of your rig goes a long way in avoiding issues at inopportune times. You’ve also done a great job on the build. Are there any companies you would like to give a shout out?
Caleb: Black Rhino Wheels (Scott Chu), Rigid Industries, GP Factor (AJ Lafferty), Adventure Imports (Adam Schalow), Dometic (Larry Jarriel), DMOS Collective (Susan Pieper), and XS Power (Brady Basner)
