Outback Swags

If you’ve ever been on a solo trip, you’ve come to realize there are a number of options for shelter that may work well in certain situations but not in others. Take for example an off-grid hunting or fishing trip where the goal is to get out on foot and stay in the backcountry, or a motorcycle adventure that requires limited gear due to limited space.

In Australia, swags have been used since before motorized vehicles became prevalent as a means for shelter that’s easily carried on one’s back. Originally, nomadic workers – called Swagmen – would carry a canvas bedroll on their back to remote work sites and over time, the swag became a popular form of shelter for remote excurisions.

Outback Swags Pioneer Swag Tent

Enter the Pioneer Swag Tent from Outback Swags. Built from rip-stop canvas with just under 3′ of headroom, the Pioneer Swag Tent is new to the U.S. and a product we’re very excited about. It features an aluminum 3-pole system and is 7′ long by 3′ wide, providing adequate space for the solo adventurer who is looking for a minimalist shelter that’s fully integrated with a 2″ foam mattress. Additionally, the Pioneer Swag Tent features four storage compartment pockets as well as a PCV vinyl shoe mat to place your wet or muddy shoes/boots after a day out in the field. There’s also plenty of ventilation with zippered mesh panels for when its hot that can be closed off to seal body heat when it gets cold. Packed weight is approximately 19lbs which isn’t light, especially compared to backpacking solo tents that weigh 1/8 this amount – or less. Still, the build quality is exceptional and you have to remember this is a fully-integrated shelter that is easy to open and has everything you need for a good night’s sleep.
