AT Overland has been procuring high quality overland products for over two decades

Situated among the snow laden rooftops and roadsides of Prescott, Arizona I had the opportunity to take a tour of the AT Overland production facility. Hosted by Mario Donovan, the man with the vision behind AT Overland’s innovative designs and products, he brings nearly 50 years of experience in manufacturing and detail orientated thinking to the table.

Founded in southern California in 2002, AT started building trailers to partner with their South African imports as the need arose for a trailer that was more suited to the US market, given the regulations and standards set forth by the Department of Transportation. The groundbreaking Horizon model opened the line and poetically ended the era of trailer production with the last build occurring in 2022.

In 2005, the Chaser trailer was designed and three prototypes were built for initial testing. Every model design from the very beginning to current production from AT Overland has been “destruction tested” to absolute failure, with the overarching philosophy of quality over quantity.
With the success of the Chaser trailer, AT set out to expand their operations and began doing vehicle-based modifications and designing and constructing cabinets for their builds, leading to the development of the first Habitat model for the Jeep JKU in 2008.

In 2010, AT Overland departed their southern California facility for their current base of operations in Arizona with a desire to be closer to those in the overland community, as well as to have more room to expand their operations. Working within 20,000 sq. ft shop space, with plans for further expansion currently underway, the production of new builds at AT Overland takes place in a streamlined and meticulously organized environment. With arrangements maximizing space and utility, every process and detail of the build is efficient and controlled. With the goal of producing energy efficient and lightweight builds, AT’s designs maximize simplicity and state of the art build methods to achieve a top tier product built entirely in their Prescott facility with only two processes being outsourced to local vendors, those being sewing and laser cutting. While utilizing a cloud-based calendar system with industry partners, AT Overland stays on top of their build schedule to ensure no processes fall behind due to lack of communication with their partners.

One of the more intriguing items coming from AT’s productions is their optional F.A.R.S device. For “Fresh Air Replenishment System”, the proprietary F.A.R.S device removes the condensation buildup that each person exhales and vents to the atmosphere while bringing in fresh air to the living space, all without sacrificing heat in cold climates. The physical footprint of this system is impressive, with it taking up little more room than a pizza box on the exterior of the build and two very inconspicuous vents on the interior.
With my own personal experience in manufacturing, it’s not a reach to see the level of critical thinking Mario and the folks at AT have put into their processes (5S is law for those of you in the know). It’s evident to see why AT Overland’s builds are so highly respected within the overland community. There’s also something new on the horizon from AT Overland, what exactly it is, details are still under a very big lock and key but look for it to debut sometime later in 2023.

The road ahead looks bright for AT Overland, with the constant expansion of their operational footprint in Arizona and the continued standard of excellence of their unit production providing quality adventure builds that equates to a full schedule of work for the foreseeable future. And with products built for off-road, you’ll be guaranteed to get maximum enjoyment and utility from AT Overland products in any environment, anywhere on the globe.
