Lensun Solar provides an easy to install option for battery charging while exploring on four-wheels

When it comes to vehicle-based travel and going off-grid, there are just a few ways to keep your electrical system up to snuff–especially your batteries. You could have your alternator do the work while driving, bring a generator along, or use solar. But then there’s the problem of a generator or solar panel taking up precious real estate.

Lensun Solar solves that problem! Their low-profile panels come ready-to-mount on your hood, an area normally not utilized for anything, and are robust enough to handle the demands offroad travel requires. The 90-watt panel kit comes with all the necessary installation hardware, as well as a 10-amp MPPT solar controller to hook up to the battery. A great feature of the controller is that it has Bluetooth connectivity so you can monitor your battery and set charging profiles depending on the type of battery you’re using.

I have a 100-watt panel already hooked up to my small house system, so I decided to have this panel wired up to the vehicle’s start battery. This way, each battery has solar to keep everything charged. The installation instructions are thorough, and the process is easy. Working with the vinyl and double-sided tape on the panel can be tricky, but taking your time will ensure success. After the panel was installed, I wired it up to the MPPT controller–an easy step since everything plugs right into each other. Then it was just hooking up the positive and negative wires to the battery and voila! I was in business! In all, the installation took two hours max.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed a difference in my batteries’ charge levels staying much higher, and I have peace of mind knowing that my Lensun Solar panel continually provides power to my vehicle systems so I can quickly and confidently go off-grid. So, if you’re needing just that little bit more sun energy for your build but space is a premium, I highly suggest checking out their huge range of hood panels! They have solar panels that fit my ’94 Montero, so if you own a vintage rig like mine, chances are they’ll have one for you, too.
