NomadIQ’s portable grill is a versatile product for home or in the backcountry
My four-wheeling friends put a lot of thought into where we are going to get the tires dirty and what breweries we might visit. This typically leaves me to plan the food and campsites. And when I plan meals, I like to have them ready before the hangry sets in.
Grilled meats and vegetables play well with everyone’s favorite beverage. Good food, something to drink, and a camp chair are all you really need to enjoy the rest of the evening. And while it can be impressive to pull a great meal from within the confines of a fire ring, if you have to find wood, build the fire, and wait for enough coals to properly grill steaks, your crew might be irritable by the time the food is plated.
All of these issues were resolved when I tested the NomadIQ portable grill. At twelve pounds, it folds into a compact unit that is easily stowed in the back of your truck. It’s roughly the size of a rolled up recovery strap.
Utilizing a standard 16 ounce propane tank, the dual zones generate 9200 BTU of even grilling flame. While not as big as my patio GrillMaster, I found the entire 262 square inch grilling surface available for up to eight burgers or six steaks at a time.
Setting up the NomadIQ is pretty easy and takes less than two minutes. The instant, regulated heat allows you to begin cooking almost immediately. As a matter of fact, setting up a table and finding all of your ingredients will take longer than preparing and setting up the NomadIQ. Use of the NomadIQ is so quick and easy you’ll be able to join your rowdy (or not so rowdy) crew to tend to your campfire while you prepare some burgers, steaks, veggies, or anything to your liking.
The NomadIQ grill is constructed using a non-stick coated aluminum, making clean up easy. The grates incorporate a guard for the heating elements to limit food and grease flare ups, and the aluminum construction also means it cools quickly for storage. It’s a well-built, compact grill that performed much better than I expected, so much so I plan to use it for tailgating and hiking/climbing day trips as well as keeping it nestled in my Land Cruiser for longer jaunts into the backcountry. Plus, given the NomadIQ is a fully-encompassed grilling solution, you’ll be able to grill even in areas where there’s a burn ban.
Likes:
- Light-weight and compact
- Easy to clean
- Even heat across the heating surface
Dislikes:
- Somewhat expensive at $299.99
- Carrying bag is necessary as the fuel hose and drip pans won’t fit inside stored grill
- There is no cover so you may have to improvise to melt cheese on burgers
