The XVENTURE XV3 camp trailer is an excellent option for mid-sized trucks, Jeeps, and SUVs for both vehicle-based and overland adventure
Back in Issue 16 of OutdoorX4, we featured Schutt Industries’ venerable XVENTURE XV2 trailer, a product with a pedigree of military applications and specifically developed for the consumer market. In that review, we noted the trailer’s utilitarian nature combined a strength and durability to which Uncle Sam had given his nod of approval. So, when the XVENTURE XV3 trailer was released in early 2017, lighter in weight and smaller in size to accommodate mid-sized trucks, Jeeps, and SUVs, we were intrigued and spent nearly two months putting it through its paces in the field.
Like its big brother, the XV3 sits on an all-aluminum frame which rolls on a solid axle with torsion bar suspension. The result is a smooth ride that provides adequate ground clearance and, most importantly, the construction is simple enough that parts can be easily found and replaced in case of a failure in the field. We’ve been told, though it hasn’t yet been verified, that the XV3 may eventually transition to the Timbren axle-less suspension, with which we have had plenty of experience. That suspension could be a significant upgrade in ride quality and overall capability, allowing for additional ground clearance, a key factor when driving off-pavement.
Another nice feature, taken from the XV2, is the lever-actuated parking brake. This prevents the trailer from rolling once detached from the tow vehicle and can be easily released with the flip of the lever. A rear adjustable vertical stabilizer system helps keep the trailer in place when it’s resting on its own.
One of the complaints Schutt Industries addressed with the XV3 was the XV2’s size — generally a bit large for smaller vehicles. Consumers have requested much of the same functionality of the XV2 platform and Schutt Industries has delivered. The XV3 features a full kitchen at the nose of the trailer and, while some of the layout and options from our test model have been and will be updated, I like the attention that went into making the design simple yet functional. A lever-actuated pull-out slide can house a two-burner stove and the nose box is split to house a full sink while the other side of the box houses a complete power distribution center featuring a 1000-watt Zamp Solar power inverter along with an intelligently laid-out battery system with switches that are labeled and which manage the water pump, lighting, and all electricals. Additional details include 12V outlets at the nose and on both sides of the rear of the trailer, as well as an Anderson connection for keeping the battery charged with solar power when it’s not drawing a charge from the tow vehicle while in transit.
I found the payload to be exceptional, carrying up to 1500 lb. with a cargo area that has plenty, and I mean plenty, of space for carrying any conceivable gear while on a weekend or a month-long journey. Integrated into the Line-X-coated cargo area is a fridge slide with all the wiring from the Rigid Industries LED lighting nicely tucked away and out of view. Our test model featured an ARB 50-qt. fridge freezer and I used a set of Front Runner Outfitters Wolf Pack storage boxes with enough room to add at least 3 or 4 more sets of these storage boxes to keep things organized. And to keep your gear safe from the elements and secure in the field, is a Truxedo hard rolling cargo bed tonneau cover that’s lockable and super easy to open and close. The swing-away tailgate also includes a galley table, perfect for food preparation while at basecamp or tailgating.
Each XV3 also includes a standard 2” hitch receiver in the rear, perfect for loading up a bike rack when your travels include hitting the singletrack. Additionally, the Rhino-Rack platform rack is high above the cargo area and large enough for attaching virtually any-sized rooftop tent or loading up with kayaks or additional gear for your vehicle-based adventure.
My overall impression is that the XV3 is the result of Schutt Industries’ recognizing the success of the XV2 trailer and listening to those seeking the durability of a larger trailer in a size that’s more practical for many enthusiasts. Its all-aluminum construction, full kitchen galley, power management system, and sizable cargo area comprises a trailer option that’s excellent for most any smaller- to mid-sized vehicle. That said, the price of entry at $10,995 can quickly add up should you choose to outfit the trailer with any of many available options. All that said, the XVENTURE XV3 is a purpose-built trailer bred for off-pavement travel and whether you use it for your next vehicle-based adventure or the next football tailgating party, you’ll be assured its quality and durability, along with its creature comforts and enhancements, will make the journey an enjoyable one.
