When Brenan Greene started the Trail 4Runner website in 2014, it was created as a solution to a problem he found with the online forum structure including a lack of organization along with the absence of accurate and detailed information specific to his vehicle platform of choice. To Brenan, the concept of a forum made sense; to bring a community together to talk about one centralized topic. However, he felt there are too many challenges with forums.

First, many forums have a framework that’s structured but not well managed. That’s not to say there aren’t “moderators” who engage with topic threads though their engagement is typically more to police the content rather than to verify its content. Additionally, most forums are free for the masses to engage with and create threads that potentially end up being 20, 30, maybe even 100 pages in length where the topic at hand is either never addressed or overshadowed by other subjects that it becomes counterproductive. From my experience, I became accustomed to viewing the first and last page of a thread when looking for answers on a subject I’m not competent in and would then look for another resource, sometimes checking YouTube though often times relying on the expertise of our own editorial staff, because I have a limited attention span and lack the time to read pages and pages of input on often times very specific questions.
