The LOWA boot company has been a fixture in the outdoor industry for years. General Manager Peter Sachs speaks with OutdoorX4 about his experience, the company, and the outdoor adventure market
Peter Sachs started out in the outdoor industry at the age of 16 working at the local ski shop. Now he’s been the General Manager of LOWA boots for 23 years with over 40 years of experience in the outdoor industry. OutdoorX4 had the opportunity to speak with Peter about his experiences at Lowa, how he spends his time outside, and his thoughts on the industry.
OX4: What’s your favorite aspect of your current work?
PS: I’ve been very fortunate to work with great people across the outdoor industry. We’re proud to provide boots for people that are out for a walk in the woods on Saturday afternoons. The goal is to offer products and good service to facilitate your extra hours or vacation days. It’s good to see smiles on people’s faces.
OX4: On that note, what’s your favorite way to get outside?
PS: During the spring, summer, and fall the bike is my go-to form of exercise. In the winter I ski 20 plus days. I really enjoy the wintertime. People sometimes are negative about winter, but you can still get outside.
OX4: Do you have a go-to weekend destination or a favorite annual trip?
PS: Not necessarily. The nature of my job requires extensive travel. I usually try to add on an extra day or two to a trip so that I can hike. If I happen to be in Africa or the Alps.
OX4: What can you tell us about the customer base of LOWA?
PS: For our core products our customers are everyone from day hikers to thru hikers. They might be peak bagging 14ers on the weekend. It seems our customers a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts, and they’re more varied each season. I think this is because the definition of the outdoors has changed in the last decade. Everyone needs good boots whether your taking a garden tour on a wet day, climbing mountains, or hunting in high altitudes.
OX4: Where do you see the outdoor industry going the next 5 to 10 years?
PS: As young adults mature they’ll pick an activity to focus on out of their current interest. I hope that they choose skiing, climbing, biking, etc. and stay involved in the outdoors.
OX4: Do you have any final thoughts for our readers?
PS: Here at LOWA we strive to serve customers that are out there to see this big world regardless of how, when, and where they are out traveling.
