Dometic’s CFX Series exudes quality and versatility for a variety of vehicle-based adventures

At 53 liters, the Dometic CFX3 55IM (IM stands for ice maker) is the ideal size for anything from overnight to four-day trips without resupply, particularly when you consider it replacing a traditional cooler. The CFX3 55IM is about the same size as a 45-liter Yeti, and although it’s 22lbs heavier when empty, it won’t take 20lbs of ice for it to work. However, it’s considerably lighter than its more affordable competitors (one of which this reviewer owns), making it more versatile as an overland fridge (and daily-use grocery hauler).

The CFX3 55IM is a sleek-looking, plastic-encased unit, but that doesn’t mean it’s not rugged. It feels solid and flexes instead of dents when something in the back of the pickup bumps into it. It does not rattle, the side-access lid fits well and doesn’t need as much vertical space to open as front-access counterparts, and the weather-proof digital interface looks and feels robust. The wide, spring-loaded handles are stout and make it possible for one person to easily carry it.

The unit is extremely quiet. I have had it running in the back of a Tundra or Outback for the past four months, and I have never heard the compressor cycle. Likewise, the fridge is incredibly efficient, cooling down to 36-degrees Fahrenheit from room temperature in the same amount of time it’d take me to run to the corner store for ice. Additionally, it sips electrical power. When hooked up via 12-volt to a fully-charged Jackery Explorer 1000, I can easily run it for four days when it’s not hot outside (although if you use the ice maker mode, consumption will increase a bit). And, although a luxury, its smartphone Bluetooth connectivity makes it to where I never have to be next to it to check or adjust its status.

It’s worth noting the ice maker, which consists of water trays placed above the compressor, is not a selling point for this reviewer. It is a nice add-on, though, and is reasonably functional and the product complements any beverage at the end of the day. It’s nice knowing it’s there.

The CFX3 55IM is a confidence-inspiring unit that exudes quality, and you quickly recognize why Dometic is a leader in the portable appliance arena. At $1,199, the unit is not the most affordable, but it’s also not the most expensive considering Dometic is a higher-end brand. I own a $400 cheaper ICECO 60-liter fridge, and although it is perfectly functional, the difference is apparent, particularly in weight and efficiency. I believe the higher price is justified.
