Pelican’s cargo case solutions offer security and peace of mind around town or in the backcountry
Cargo storage is an ever-present struggle when loading up for an excursion. What to take, what to leave, what you’ll need to bring vs. what you want to bring. For those of us that operate out of the Tacoma, this conundrum finds its way not only into our adventure planning, but into our daily lives as well. The bed mounted truck box has been a mainstay for generations now. I remember being a child in the early 1980’s trying to figure out what wasn’t in the toolbox of my grandpa’s 1970’s Chevrolet. It always seemed as if there was something he needed, it was in there. There has always been a gap when it comes to truck boxes for the Tacoma. It was as if that not one box available fit quite right and you could forget about removing the box quickly should the need arise.
This is the problem Pelican designed their BX135 cargo case to solve. This case along with their Tacoma specific Cross-Bed Mount system, (Sold Separately), is designed to fit securely in the bed of your Tacoma, between the “wheel wells”, allowing you to transport your belongings safely, securely, and easily.
The build quality of this cargo case is standard for Pelican, excellent. Pelican is known for its rugged and durable cases, and the BX135 is no exception. The case is constructed from high-impact polymer, which is both lightweight and incredibly strong. Watertight and dustproof, you can be sure that your belongings will stay dry and clean no matter the weather or terrain.
In terms of storage capacity, the BX135 is impressive. With interior dimensions of 30.8″ x 17.3″ x 16″, you can fit a lot of gear in this case. The BX135 also features three double-throw latches that are easy to open and close, as well as the capability to lock all three latches with a cable or individual padlocks to help to keep your belongings secure. These three latches are actually the only negative I can find with the case itself. I feel that two, wider width latches would be easier to actuate for access to the case. Even at 6’ tall with average reach, I found the center latch to be difficult to pop on and off without having to jump up onto the bedside. Also, the latches are easily victims of gravity when the lid is open, you’ll have to be sure they’re clear and in the up position when closing the case, as the latches will hinder the lid from properly closing.
The Cross-Bed mounts are also in a league of their own. They are made from heavy-duty steel, also have lockable capabilities, and are designed to fit perfectly in the bed rail system of your Tacoma. The mounts are easy to install and come with all the necessary hardware to get them securely attached to your rig. The only issue I found with these is that the fasteners need to be loosened and the mount arm dropped away to remove the case easily, especially when loaded. While this is a plus for security, it does make removing the case for easier access a hassle. Perhaps Pelican engineers could mod the design slightly to achieve this outcome. (FYI- I’m available for consultation)
One of the things that I love about the BX135 is its versatility. You can use it to transport all kinds of gear, from camping equipment to tools to sports equipment. I’m sure it could probably function as a makeshift cooler if the ice was plentiful, and the weather was kind enough.
Not to mention how good this case and mounts look on the Tacoma. The flat black finish of the case and mounts matches perfectly with the Tacoma’s rugged and sporty aesthetic. It’s clear that Pelican designed this product with both form and function in mind.
The only real downside is cost. At $370, the BX135 can be hard to quantify for those on a shoestring budget. However, it’s far easier to quantify the cost if you’re using it regularly, whether in the backcountry or around town. Additionally, you’re paying for quality of which Pelican has been known for years, giving you peace of mind your gear will be safe from point A to point B.
If you’re looking for a rugged, lightweight, and reliable way to transport your gear, this is definitely worth your consideration. The quality, capacity, and versatility of the BX135 from Pelican makes it a great choice for any outdoor enthusiast or adventurer.
