Alex Honnold Free Climbs Skyscraper

January 28, 2026

In 2018, Alex Honnold made history by becoming the first-ever climber to free solo (to climb without a fixed rope, harness, or any safety equipment) El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Alex’s successful climb, documented in the Oscar-winning film Free Solo, chronicled the climb and catapulted Alex into climbing lore.

On Saturday, January 24, Alex Honnold has again accomplished one of the most daring free solos ever attempted: a ropeless, real-time ascent of Taipei 101, one of the tallest skyscrapers on the planet.

Broadcast live on Netflix, Skyscraper Live captured every second of Honnold’s climb as it happened—without ropes, without a safety net, and without the option of a second take. Audiences worldwide watched as the legendary climber confronted the building’s distinctive architectural obstacles, transforming an iconic urban landmark into a sheer vertical test of precision, endurance, and focus.

For Honnold, the most surreal part wasn’t just that the climb happened, but how different it felt to finally do what he had spent years imagining. “It’s incredible,” he said afterward. “You spend so long thinking about it and imagining that it’s possible, but actually doing it always feels different.”
