A basecamp stool that’s lightweight, versatile, and better than sitting on a rock

For the past few years, I’ve been using Hillsound’s BTR Ultralight Tripod Stool on camping and fishing trips. There are three versions; the 17” version – weighing in at under fifteen ounces – is lightweight, easy to stow, and incredibly easy to set up.

The stool came in handy when weight and space were important considerations during camping, hiking, and fishing trips. It tucks neatly into the water bottle pouch on my daypack and carrying it for long distances is not a chore, as many chairs are. I appreciated the chair’s mesh bottom; after a brief rain shower, I was able to use it soon thereafter. On an eight-mile hike last fall, the stool provided a great place to take a break and enjoy lunch. Once set up, the stool’s dimensions are a generous 14” x 13” x 17.5.” I appreciated the comfort that the stool provided, as I often find that sitting on rocks to take breaks bothers my back. And this last point led Hillsound to call the stool the BTR, because “the BTR is always Better Than a Rock!” Its seat is easily removed for cleaning, but since it’s made of nylon mesh, you may not find this necessary. The only downside to the stool was that it lacked back support, but that is true of any stool, and the advantages Hillsound’s stool offers far outweigh this.

To set up the stool, one merely releases the elastic cord, extends the legs and listens for them to click securely into place, then twists open the stool’s legs to enjoy a comfortable seat. A bungee cord loops around the folded stool, and stowing it takes seconds. The folded stool has a tiny footprint – 3” x 3” x 13.6” – so including it on adventures will not sacrifice space for other gear.

Hillsound’s BTR Ultralight Tripod Stool is available in three colors, three sizes, and pricing ranging from $89.95 – $99.95. Learn more by visiting their website at www.hillsound.com.
