Cooper Tires Discoverer MTP Tire

New for 2016, adding to the Cooper branded line of tires sold solely by Discount Tire, is the Cooper Discoverer MTP tire. Cooper Tire has a reputation for offering durable, well engineered tires that have spanned many continents. The Discoverer MTP provides an aggressive off-road tread pattern while compromising very little on the highway.

Highway impressions

While being as aggressive as a mud terrain can be, these tires are designed with qualities that allow acceptable on highway traction and handling characteristics. The most notable is the tires wet weather traction. With the unfortunate amount of stormy driving we’ve seen in recent trips, we have been thankful for its grip and well designed tread which aids in the evacuation of water. Variable depth siping and silica enriched tread compound help the tires maintain traction on slick surfaces. These attributes lead to good all weather traction. Road noise is noticeable, but acceptable for a such an aggressive pattern. The large tread voids do create low speed vibrations which markedly rattles the loose change in the cup holder. The Cooper Discoverer MTP does not have a mileage based warranty (standard for off road tires), but is supported by Coopers Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty.

Off-road impressions

When looking for a tire, we weigh our needs based on the terrains we frequent. Needing a tire capable enough to claw its way up greasy clay hills, while still being quiet, comfortable, and safe enough to drive what seems an endless distance to the desert, only to challenge its strength and durability on the trail. We’ve been in the position of needing to change tires due to premature sidewall failures. It’s never fun and it’s always expensive. The carcass of the Cooper Discoverer MTP is a standard two ply design, which has proven durable. Helping this tire’s durability is its excellent sidewall design with thick biting edges which not only protect but provide additional traction. Airing down, the E-rated sidewall rating shows its thickness by flexing very little but enough to adhere while crawling over rocks.

Overall
OutdoorX4 has had the opportunity to test these tires in almost all conditions with the exception of snow and ice. Traction-wise, we have not been disappointed. Tread wear and longevity are still unknown, but in the first 6,000 miles (nearly 1,200 of which involved pulling a trailer), the tires have worn only 1/32 of an inch. Noise levels and vibration are as expected from such a tire. Thus far, we are completely satisfied and consider the Cooper Discoverer MTP an excellent value from a solid manufacturer.

These tires are offered in the most popular sizes. The tires being tested are size 285/75-16, load range E, and installed on an overland outfitted Lexus LX470 (Toyota Landcruiser 100 series).
