2019 Roof Top Tent Rally at James River State Park

The Roof Top Tent Rally is a partnership between Blue Ridge Overland Gear and James River State Park hosted on a grassy clearing overlooking the James River. In the three years since the first rally, it has quickly become a fixture amongst the East Coast overland gatherings. While the event is by no means small at 250 vehicles in addition to vendors and staff, the central fire ring, spacious camping, and relaxed schedule make for a rally that feels more like a weekend with friends than a formal event.

The rally draws lots of rigs of all shapes and sizes. Some found secluded spots around the perimeter, while others congregated with friends old and new.

A number of vendors set up around the bonfire area where attendees could check out products, take part in activities for kids, or try their skills at the impressive apple slingshot. Classes on vehicle recovery, first-aid, photography, and other overland rated topics were open to attendees.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a gathering of overlanders if great food wasn’t involved. The crew from Family Adventures Overlanding hosted an excellent cooking contest. After much deliberation among the judges, a winner was announced, but undoubtedly everyone that participated had true culinary skills.

The evenings were rounded out with live music and a huge fire. The relaxed pacing helped everyone savor their time there. OutdoorX4 was more than happy to be invited, and we would like to thank James River State Park, Blue Ridge Overland Gear, the other sponsors, and everyone else that made this such a great event. We’re already looking forward to the 2020 rally.
